Applying for U.S. Citizenship

Once you immigrate to the U.S., you need to go through naturalization to officially become a U.S. citizen.  To qualify, you must have lived in the U.S. for at least half of five years (913 days), or half of three years (548 days) if you’re married to a U.S. citizen.

Upon naturalizing, you can gain access to exclusive federal benefits, apply for a Green Card for a wider range of your loved ones, travel the world with one of the most powerful passports available, and fully embrace the American dream.

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Applying for citizenship is the next logical step for Green Card holders who intend to settle down in the United States.

 All naturalization applicants must meet the following requirements unless they qualify for an exemption or apply based on U.S. military service.

Minimum Age

You must be at least 18 years old to apply for naturalization.

Continuous Physical Presence

You must have continuously lived in the U.S. as a Green Card holder for at least half of five years, or at least half of three years if you’re married to a U.S. citizen. By continuous, we mean you did not travel outside the U.S. for six months or more during this period. You also need to remain in the U.S. while your citizenship application is being processed.

Good Moral Character

According to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS), good moral character is broadly defined as behaviour that aligns with the standards of average citizens. To meet this requirement, you must not have committed certain crimes, such as murder, illegal gambling, or defrauding the government, and you must not have received two or more DUI convictions before applying for naturalization.

English Proficiency and Knowledge of U.S. Civics

You must pass a two-part test to qualify for citizenship. The first is an English language test that evaluates your reading, writing, and speaking skills. The second is a civics test designed to assess your knowledge of U.S. history and government.

However, some applicants may be exempt from one or both tests, depending on their age and how long they have been a Green Card holder. You can reach out to our U.S. immigration attorneys to learn more about these exemptions, and if you qualify for them.

Military Service Registration

You must be willing to serve in the U.S. military or partake in civil service if ever called upon. For this, males who have lived in the United States (or received their Green Card) between the ages of 18 and 26 must register with the Selective Service System.

Swear Allegiance to the United States

You need to swear allegiance to the U.S. by accepting the responsibilities of a U.S. citizen, promising to obey the law, and renouncing your allegiance to other countries where you may hold citizenship.

The U.S. immigration system is complicated, but our naturalization attorneys can guide you through your citizenship application with minimal stress and hassle. Contact Blue Lake Law today!

What to Expect During the Naturalization Procedure

Blue Lake Law’s U.S. citizenship attorneys can help you navigate complex citizenship laws, avoid errors that may lead to delays, and maximize your chances of approval. Here are the steps involved in the naturalization process, and what we can do for you.

Filling Form N-400

We will guide you through filling  Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, and file the petition with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). We’ll meticulously  collect all evidence and documentation to make sure your paperwork is completed accurately.

Biometrics Examination

Once your application is accepted, the USCIS will schedule a biometrics appointment if they need to take your fingerprints, photo, and signature.

Attending the Naturalization Interview

Next, the USCIS will send you the details of your naturalization interview. Our attorneys will help you review and prepare for the interview  ensuring you understand everything. .

On the day of the interview, you’ll need to appear at the USCIS office. We will help you gather all the essential documents you must bring with you, such as:

· Your interview appointment notice;

· Form I-551, Permanent Resident Card;

· A state-issued ID, like a driver’s licence;

· All valid and expired passports and travel documents that record your trips outside the United States since becoming a permanent resident.

During the interview, you will answer questions under oath about your background, immigration history, and character. We’ll provide tips on how to prepare and present yourself confidently.

After the interview, you will take a citizenship test to assess your English skills and civic knowledge. If you pass, and your paperwork is correct, your naturalization status may be approved on the same day.

Taking the Oath

You only become a U.S. citizen after taking the Oath of Allegiance at a naturalization ceremony.

The USCIS will send you a letter (Form N-445, Notice of Naturalization Oath Ceremony) with the date, time, and location of your ceremony. After you take the Oath, you’ll receive your Certificate of Naturalization.
