What is an IR5 visa?
An IR5 visa is a type of U.S. immigration visa specifically designed for parents of U.S. Citizens or permanent residents who are 21 years old or older. Falling under the “Immediate Relative” visa category, the IR5 visa has no limit on the number of visas issued.
The IR5 parent visa allows immigrant parents to live permanently, work without needing employment authorization, and apply for U.S. citizenship if/when requirements are met.
IR5 application processing times
Like other visa types, IR5 application processing times can vary based on many factors, including the USCIS’ workload, and more. The IR5 application processing can take around 6 to 12 months to complete, though delays can occur due to additional document requests.
Once applied, we recommend regularly checking the USCIS and NVC websites to stay up to date on your specific application.
IR5 interview questions
The IR5 interview isn’t designed to challenge you or catch you out in any way – the interview is in place to verify the legitimacy of the parent-child relationship.
While the questions may change per interview, you can expect to be asked questions along the lines of the following:
- Who will be sponsoring you?
- When was your child born?
- Where was your child born?
- How many other children do you have?
- What is your child’s current occupation?
- Where will you live in the U.S.?
- Have you ever been arrested for a crime?
- Have you ever been denied a visa to the U.S.?
IR5 Interview questions can vary vastly depending on each case. The interviewee should bring all required documents, including birth certificates, medical exam results, and financial evidence from the child sponsor.
Rights and benefits of an IR5 visa holder
IR5 visa holders gain several important benefits, as they are now considered lawful permanent residents of the United States. Below are some of the benefits you can expect from your IR5 visa.
Working benefits
With an IR5 green card, an individual will have the ability to live and work anywhere across the U.S. without restrictions, and do not need a separate work permit to start a business or find a job.
Social security
IR5 visa holders can also apply for a Social Security number, which will grant them access to financial services, and government services such as:
- Medicare & Medicaid eligibility
- Banking
- Driver’s Licence & State ID application
- Higher education and student loans
- Disability support
Open travel
In addition to working and social benefits, IR5 visa holders can travel in and out of the United States as they wish (Staying out of the U.S. for 12 months or longer can put the permanent residency at risk).
Citizenship eligibility
After maintaining green card status for at least 5 years, the green card holder can apply for U.S. citizenship, which provides additional rights such as voting and the ability to sponsor other family members for immigration.
